HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK ↓

SIGNAL 1
Your new hire might be a hologram

The plot twist: Candidate fraud used to mean a padded résumé. Now it’s deepfakes, proxy interviews, and company laptops shipped to strangers.

By the numbers:

  • 72% of staffing buyers hit candidate fraud, up from 41% last year

  • 55% saw identity fraud, the most common type

  • 76% of staffing recruiters say fraud is more common than 3 years ago

The flip: Beeline CEO Doug Leeby says buyers ranked talent or cost first for 20 years. Now risk is #1. Top worry? Ghost work: your “hire” quietly farms the job out to someone in a state or country you don’t do business in.

Translation: Your contractor has a contractor.

Signal → Strategy: Add identity and liveness verification to your remote submittals, then put it on your next QBR slide. Buyers now rank risk above price, so “verified human” is your new differentiator.

SIGNAL 2
Direct hire: 10 giants, 7% of the pie

The headline: The world’s 10 largest direct-hire firms own just 7% of a $75.6 billion global market. The top 50? Only 10%.

The leaderboard:

  • Persol (Japan) is #1 with a whopping 1.34% share

  • Asia-Pacific drives 52% of global perm revenue; the Americas just 17%

  • China alone is an $18.3 billion market

Why it won’t consolidate: SIA chalks it up to perm being relationship-driven, specialized, and allergic to scale.

Translation: In perm, the three-recruiter boutique with a sharp niche is out-placing the conglomerate. Size isn’t the moat. Relationships are.

Signal → Strategy: Position your niche as the edge, not the excuse. Pick one specialty where you can name the top 50 candidates by heart, then pitch clients on depth the global giants can’t match.

SIGNAL 3
One client, 100% of your profit

The math nobody wants to do: A $20M agency at 25% margin with $4M overhead makes $1M in operating profit. Lose a 20% client and $1M of gross profit vanishes. Overhead doesn’t. That client was all your profit.

Concentration creep:

  • 42% of agencies lost revenue in 2025; 69% of them expect growth in 2026

  • RCM Technologies’ top 5 clients hit 51% of revenue, up from 48.5%

  • TrueBlue’s top 10 climbed to 26.2%, up from 20.5% in 2023

The sneaky part: A $2M MSP account at 12% margin and a $2M direct client at 32% look identical on a revenue report. One delivers nearly 3x the gross profit.

Signal → Strategy: Rank clients by trailing 12-month gross profit, not billings. If your top three’s share is climbing, start landing new logos before one renewal call wipes out your year.

RECRUITING CONFESSIONAL
The Candidate Who Survived a Car, an Almond, and Happy Hour

Recruiting Confessional A weekly series featuring anonymous stories from recruiting and staffing professionals. Submit yours here.

The Setup: A colleague booked a candidate for an interview. He no-showed, then called two hours later to explain he’d been hit by a car.

The Twist: She gave him the benefit of the doubt and rebooked. He no-showed again. This time he’d broken a tooth on an almond and had to rush to the dentist. My endlessly trusting colleague booked interview number three.

He actually showed up.
