The job market ghosted September
+Staffing revenue rebounds & AI finally earns its keep

Signal Summary: The job market just ghosted September. Staffing revenue just posted its best reading since 2022. And AI is finally paying off, which is great news unless you're middle management. Plus, a candidate who showed up late and solved the problem by adjusting time itself.

HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK ↓

SIGNAL 1
September's jobs report showed up empty-handed
The miss: The US added just 29,000 jobs in September. Economists expected 84,000.
Where it hurt:
Healthcare, the usual MVP, added only 17,000 jobs (vs. a 33,000 monthly average)
AI-exposed sectors like business services and information shed jobs
July and August got revised down a combined 60,000. Summer was a mirage.
The fine print: Unemployment ticked up to 4.2%, still low by historical standards. But wage growth slowed to 3%, the lowest since the pandemic. Workers are treading water.
Signal → Strategy: Call clients sitting on frozen perm reqs this week. Pitch contract-to-hire as the low-risk bridge: projects keep moving, headcount stays flexible, and nobody explains a bad hire to the CFO.

SIGNAL 2
Staffing revenue finally stopped doom-scrolling
Breaking: Median staffing revenue rose 5% year over year in August, the highest Pulse reading since late 2022. Cue the industry's first collective exhale in three years.
Who's winning:
Engineering: +10%
Industrial: +8% (data centers are basically a jobs program now)
IT +5%, travel nursing +4%
Finance/accounting: flat (the spreadsheet crowd is still waiting on its comeback)
The twist: Asked what matters most competitively over the next 2-3 years, 52% said AI, tech, and data. Human relationships? 42%. Somewhere, a 30-year recruiter just spilled his coffee.
Signal → Strategy: Target engineering and industrial clients tied to data center builds. Then audit your own tech stack, because over half of surveyed firms say AI capability decides who wins next.

SIGNAL 3
AI finally pays rent. Middle management gets the eviction notice.
The reversal: Last year, BCG found just 5% of companies getting real value from AI.
Now it's nearly half.
Follow the money:
AI spend doubled to 3.3% of revenue, with 80%+ sitting outside the IT budget
42% expect AI agents making real decisions by 2030. Only 5% have the controls to do it safely.
What's really happening:
Companies expect 10-15% workforce cuts by 2030, hitting middle management hardest
Dedicated AI roles set to triple, from 7% to 22% of the workforce
Signal → Strategy: Position your firm as the AI talent pipeline. Build a bench of AI governance, automation, and change management contractors now, while AI roles triple and almost nobody can govern their agents.

RECRUITING CONFESSIONAL
The Architect Who Redesigned Time
Recruiting Confessional A weekly series featuring anonymous stories from recruiting and staffing professionals. Submit yours here.
The Setup: We were interviewing for an architect. Our candidate strolled in 10 minutes late.
The Twist: Instead of apologizing, he informed us our clock was wrong. Then he took it off the wall and adjusted it himself. Bold design choice. Zero client consultation.
The Aftermath: The moment he left, we put the clock back to the actual time. He did not get the job. We needed someone we could work with.
